11 Things I Quickly Learned After Moving to Colorado

Eight months ago, we did something I never thought we’d actually do. We left our home state of Jersey and flew 1,800 miles west to Colorado, the state we now call home. We made the official move on October 31.
While I always fancied the idea of moving out of Jersey and venturing off somewhere new, leaving meant moving away from family and close friends. That meant we’d lose our support system. And when you have children, having a strong, solid support system is incredibly important.
It also meant that I’d have to tell my employer that I’m heading out west since my husband accepted a job promotion that we couldn’t pass up. Fortunately, my employer at the time offered me a remote part-time position. (Looking for a job in a new state during a pandemic while trying to get our toddler into daycare was not something I wanted to have to do.)
Although we had to learn to adjust to having no family or close friends nearby and get familiar with life in Colorado, we are extremely happy out here and know we made the right decision. Matt and I are both career-oriented individuals and big believers in taking advantage of opportunities when presented. While moving meant I had to turn down a job promotion (super grateful I was offered the remote PT position due to our moving situation) we were confident it would all work out – and it did. Last month I accepted a full-time position with a company out here. We’ve made several new friends in our neighborhood and surrounding area. Despite the distance, we never lost connection with our close friends and family back home, many of whom have or are planning to come out to visit.
Welcome to the Centennial State!
Visiting every state in the U.S. is a bucket list item and Colorado has long been at the top of our list. Friends and family who traveled here told of us the natural beauty and abundance of outdoor activities and adventures to enjoy. These stories helped us feel more confident in our decision to move.
Well, now we know what they were referring to. And we agree, it’s gorgeous out here and there’s always something to do. I think I’ve been more active and outside in the mere eight months I’ve lived in Colorado than the entire 32 years I spent living in Jersey.
Almost as soon as we moved here, we noticed certain things that subtly stand out to us. Without a doubt, every state has differences, some maybe considered quirky and odd, and others interesting and fun.
Whether you’ve lived in Colorado all or most of your life, you might agree that these are just a few things you learn quickly when you move here.
