21 Ways to Help Others This Holiday Season
As we wrap up the spooky fun month of October, our focus shifts to the warm and festive holidays: Thanksgiving and Christmas.
For many of us, myself included, the holiday season represents fun celebrations and joyous memories: enjoying a warm meal with family and friends, decorating the Christmas tree, and getting cozy by the fire watching a holiday classic. However, not everyone gets to spend the holidays like so due to financial and mental health struggles.
Financial Hardships
Did you know that more than 42 million Americans live in food-insecure households? Many families lack the financial resources to afford food to feed their entire family. Additionally, nearly 4 million low-income households struggle to cover the costs of rent or mortgage payments, car payments, medical expenses, and other debt. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 21% of all children live in low-income families. These families often do not have the financial means to spend money on gifts.
Mental Health Struggles
The holiday season can create excessive stress, leaving many feeling lonely, anxious, and depressed. A survey by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) found that 3 in 5 Americans feel their mental health is negatively impacted by the holidays. According to the American Psychological Association, 38% of people surveyed said their stress increased during the holiday season. This makes sense considering the holidays are a time of high emotion and demands. Unfortunately, this can ruin the holiday experience.
A Time of Generosity
Remember, the holidays are a time of generosity. This is an opportune time to help others who are less fortunate. Also, be thankful for all that you have. Whether through donation or action, there are many opportunities to help others and make the holidays a bit brighter. Even a small act can go a long way in making someone’s holiday.
