So, grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and get ready for a frightfully fun movie marathon!
1. “The Shining” (1980)
Directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Stephen King’s novel, “The Shining” is a chilling masterpiece that continues to haunt audiences to this day. Jack Nicholson’s iconic performance as Jack Torrance, a writer slowly descending into madness while isolated in an eerie hotel, will keep you on the edge of your seat. I have not seen this movie, but many have raved about it.
2. “Halloween” (1978)
This classic slasher film, “Halloween” introduced the world to the relentless and terrifying Michael Myers. With its haunting score and suspenseful plot, “Halloween” remains a top liked movie by many. However, I must disagree. This movie, as well as its sequels, didn’t send shivers down my spine.
3. “Get Out” (2017)
Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, “Get Out,” combines freight and social commentary to create an unsettling and thought-provoking film. The story follows a young African-American man as he visits his white girlfriend’s family, only to discover a sinister secret lurking beneath the surface. Honestly, I found this to be more of a comedy.
4. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984)
In Wes Craven’s iconic horror film, Freddy Krueger invades the nightmares of a group of teenagers, leading to terrifying consequences in the real world. With its imaginative premise and Robert Englund’s unforgettable portrayal of Freddy, this movie has become a horror classic. Although I don’t find this frightening, either, I do very much like the plot and Freddy’s appearance.
5. “The Conjuring” (2013)
Now THIS is what I call terror! If you enjoy supernatural horror, “The Conjuring” is a must-see. Based on real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film follows the couple as they encounter a malevolent presence terrorizing a family’s farmhouse. This is part of a series, so if you enjoy this movie, definitely watch the rest.
6. “Psycho” (1960)
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” is a pioneering psychological horror film that has left an indelible mark on the genre. Follow Marion Crane’s ill-fated stay at the eerie Bates Motel and her encounter with the enigmatic Norman Bates.
7. “Hereditary” (2018)
Prepare yourself for a deeply disturbing and atmospheric horror experience with “Hereditary.” This movie delves into the terrifying secrets of a family’s ancestry and the sinister forces that haunt them.
8. “The Exorcist” (1973)
Often regarded as one of the scariest movies of all time, “The Exorcist” portrays the harrowing possession of a young girl and the attempts to save her soul. Its haunting visuals and intense performances will leave you with lasting chills. For some reason, these exorcists-type movies never interested me, but they are highly popular.
9. “It” (2017)
Based on Stephen King’s novel, “It” introduces audiences to the malevolent entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Follow a group of kids as they face their worst fears in the small town of Derry.
10. “Insidious” (2010)
Just like “The Conjuring,” this is a favorite horror movie of mine, and no Halloween movie list would be complete without it.” This haunting and chilling film, directed by James Wan, takes you on a terrifying journey into the world of paranormal activity. When a family moves into a new home, they soon discover that their son has fallen into a mysterious coma-like state, and the house is plagued by malevolent spirits. As they seek the help of a psychic and spiritual medium, they unravel dark secrets and face unimaginable horrors beyond their comprehension.
This Halloween season, immerse yourself in the spine-tingling world of horror with these best scary movies. From classic slashers to psychological thrillers, supernatural tales, and haunted house nightmares, there’s something for every horror aficionado.
