Car Must-Haves for Parents: Free Printable Lists (Common + Surprisingly Useful Items)

Have you ever driven somewhere and realized you needed something—but didn’t have it? Maybe a fork? A clean cup? A fresh outfit for your toddler? Or even something as simple as a diaper?

Even before becoming a mom, I always kept a few everyday essentials in my car—plastic utensils, napkins, hand sanitizer. But once I had kids, that list grew quickly. Now, with a five-year-old and a one-year-old, my car has become a mobile command center of “just-in-case” items. With two kids at different stages, their needs vary, but there’s plenty of overlap. My center console (and let’s be honest, most compartments in my car) have unintentionally become storage space for all sorts of items I never thought I’d keep in there. But that’s life with kids!

Eventually, I had to keep a small bag in the trunk because the collection of stuff was growing fast—and honestly, everything in it has come in handy more than once.

Because let’s face it: no one wants to be stuck in a car with kids who need something now. Making an emergency stop isn’t always simple or quick—and depending on your kid’s mood, it may end in a meltdown or in you buying the most random item in a convenience store (like batteries for a toy they don’t even have with them).

Juggling kids and their needs on the go is already a challenge, so why not make life a little easier? Having a small stash of supplies in your car can help avoid stress, save time, and keep your kids (and you!) a lot more comfortable.

Of course, not everything belongs in a car—like baby wipes, which can dry out. But over time, I’ve figured out the must-have items that really make life easier on the road with kids. Below are the essentials I always keep with me, plus some surprising extras other parents swear by
