Celebrate New Year’s With the Mummers!

While many people woke up on New Year’s Day recovering from the night before, Philadelphia residents and locals alike woke up early, layered up, and made their way onto the streets of Philadelphia, gathering to watch the annual Mummers Day parade.

The traditional American event, first held on January 1, 1901, has continued to draw a large crowd of people to the city streets. Each year, thousands of people participate in the Mummers Day parade (part of clubs), dressed in lavish and elaborate costumes, playing instruments and dancing on the streets with scenery and props they created. Each club competes to win in one of the four categories: comics, fancies, string bands and fancy brigades. Judges determine the winners of each division at City Hall.
